How did we start

We had been farming in Europe on a small scale since 1992, but with the price of land in Europe we were never going to achieve our dream of helping rare breeds on any scale.

That all changed when, in May 2004, after a long wait, we landed in Canada as new immigrants. We decided to tour the Maritimes before heading west with the intention of settling in Alberta.

The rest, as they say, is history as once we had seen PEI, we couldn't imagine living anywhere else, so we immediately set about finding our own little piece of Canada in which to settle.

We found it in beautiful Dundas,in King's County, halfway between Montague and Souris.

We quickly found an ideal place with 40 acres, and once we settled in, we were very soon joined by K'nu, Ink and Shrek in the house.

We are commited to the conservation of rare and heritage breeds, so since settling we have been looking for ideal species and breeds to keep on our small mixed farm

Our Goal

To provide the best tasting meat possible using only natural, chemical free methods

Preserve rare breeds of farm livestock selected especially for its quality

Provide a humane and healthy environment for our animals & family while protecting the soil and water

Offer educational opportunities to teach others how to manage the land in a sustainable manner

Quality meats

We raise delicious wholesome meats for folks right here in Prince Edward Island. We settle for nothing less than the best when it comes to feeding our family and we have so much fun raising it, we decided to share our bounty with our neighbors. Give us a try, and I think you will enjoy this home raised all natural meat as much as we do.

At Dundas Heritage Farm, we believe exceptional quality meat is a three step process:

It starts with genetics and animal selection

We've selected rare, old breeds (also known as heritage breeds) for their taste and meat quality. We found the heritage breeds do best on pasture management and produce the rich, tender and juicy flavor we like. The meat we raise comes from animals born right here in on the farm. Come visit us and we'll show you the process we go through to create the best tasting meat you can put in your mouth.

Humanely raising the animal on open pasture with all natural, quality nutrition

Our animals spend most of their life on open pastures were they get plenty of lush grass in summer, and our own hay in winter. Add some mineral and our very own spring water. That's it!

Processing the meat in a way that retains that quality

We use a local processing plant that provide the highest quality controls and inspections. We are glad to custom package your meats to your specifications.

Are there any health benefits to raising meat this way?

Studies have shown that meat raised on grass is higher in omega-3 oils, rich in vitamins and minerals, and contains less fat and cholesterol. Our products are guaranteed to be free of chemicals or drugs. You may try our meat for the health benefits but you'll come back for the taste!

Why bother?

We chose this lifestyle first because we love animals and second because we prefer to know where our food comes from. I hope our love is evident in the care we provide our animals as shown in the pictures of this web site.

We go to great pains to produce a healthy animal that lives a productive life while enjoying wide open spaces, fresh air, and social interaction with the herd. We use a variety of natural products and practices in place of harsh chemicals to achieve optimal health.

Our main source of feed for our animals is grass so it all begins with the soil. We let the animals naturally fertilize the ground.

They are confined no more than is absolutely necessary. We have several paddocks or pastures that we rotate on a regular basis in order to prevent them from over grazing and killing certain plants.

We believe you must work with nature, not against it. That's why we raise a variety of animals. Nature has no monocultures and neither should farms.

When our animals do need supplemental feed in the form of grains, (only the chickens, and occasionally the pigs) we purchase whole grains locally at a feed mill that custom mixes to our specifications to be free of all added chemicals.

We welcome our customers to analyze our feed labels as we take pride in the quality nutrition and safe feed we provide our animals. We NOT feed corn or soy to any of our livestock.

Our animals are not just our livelihood. They are our passion, our joy, our pride, and our calling. We are with them when they come into this world and are there with them every day as they grow and explore the farm.

We know each animal individually and work to provide them the healthiest environment possible. You can be assured that these animals are raised humanely and are given a full and active life.
